Genus: Citrus – Family: Rutaceae
Lemon signals a time of purpose, action and clarity. This is a time of making our dreams a reality.
Citrus limon, is a small evergreen tree that produces the bright yellow fruit known as lemons. Lemons are a multi-purpose powerhouse valued for its refreshing juice, medicinal benefits and cleansing qualities.
Lemons are the result of millions of years of crossbreeding between: citron, pomelo, papeda and mandarin, all native to Asia and India. Lemons are a hybrid between bitter orange and citron first cultivated in Burma. Lemons were introduced to Persians (Iraq) around 700 CE. Lemons were first recorded in an Arabic book on farming because they were the first culture to take the hybridizing of lemons and limes seriously. The word “lemon” comes from the Persian word limun.
Persian limes, Citrus latifolia, are first cousins to the lemon. Lemons and limes complement each other and are often use together, especially in beverages. Lemons grew in popularity throughout the Arab world before spreading to the Mediterranean. Christopher Columbus was the first person to bring lemon seeds to the “New World” where they were cultivated as an ornamental plant with medicinal benefits.
Lemons are a multi-purpose fruit whose benefits are still being discovered. Lemon juice is used to make refreshing drinks and cocktails along with being a tenderizing agent and preservative. Lemons and lemon zest (rind of lemon) are popular ingredients for sauces, salad dressings, desserts and other dishes. Whole lemons are used to make marmalade, lemon curd and lemon liquor.
The health benefits of lemon continue to grow beyond being an excellent source of vitamin C. Lemons help to alkalize our pH levels, lower cholesterol, boost liver function and increase metabolism. The citric acid in lemon juice is used to remove grease and stains. It is a natural deodorizer that also works as a disinfectant. The oil from the lemon peel is used a wood cleaner and polish as well as a nontoxic solution for insect spray. Lemon essential oil works as a calming agent to help us relax and clear our minds.
