Almond – Purpose
Genus: Prunus – Family: Rosaceae
The almond tree brings a heightened sense of purpose in the spiritual and earthly realms of our reality. This is a powerful time of manifestation and transformation as we have the ability to change the direction of our life as we bring our life’s purpose into focus.
“Almond” in Hebrew means, “to awake.” Almond blossoms signal the awakening of spring. The seven-branched menorah (oil lamp), described in Exodus: 25-27 is based on a blossoming almond tree. The branches correlate to the seven “lamps” or planets that were seen with the naked eye (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the Sun, Moon) also known as the heavenly “wanderers” or “Seven Sages”.
This seven-branched oil lamp also inspired the diagram of the Kabbalah, known as the Tree of Life. The three left branches represented the forces of darkness; the three right branches were the light. The central trunk was the self-giving one.
The English word “almond” is derived from the Greek word amygdala. “Amygdala” is also used to describe two “almond-shaped” clusters of neurons found deep in the medial temporal lobes of our brain, in both the right and left hemispheres. They function as an internal “alarm” that processes our response to fear that is sensed within our heart, which triggers the “flight, fight, freeze or fawn” response. The right side interprets negative stimuli as factual. The left discerns it as pleasant or unpleasant. As we move through our fears we do have the ability to rewire how our brain responds to stressful situations. The almond tree reminds us to make peace within ourselves as we accept the wisdom and love held in both the light and dark aspects of life.
The deciduous almond tree is native to the Middle East, India and North Africa. The fruit of the almond is a drupe, encased by an outer hull containing a woody shell. Inside the shell is the edible seed commonly referred to as a nut. Almond reminds us to keep an open mind as life is not always as hard as we perceive it to be.
Message: When almond appears, we are being asked to integrate all aspects of what is being presented to us as we step out of fear and into the realm of positive action and magical thinking. Almond reminds us to become conscious of our inner dialogue and to realize that we are the one who is wondering. Now is a time of self-mastery, self-fulfillment and self-perception as we actively create a new way of living with purpose and vision.
Challenge: Our ego is preventing us from seeing the bigger picture of life. Egomania, megalomania and over inflation of self are overpowering our sense of reason and shadowing our desire for happiness and love. Release the desire to judge or be right.
